This decorative serving plate is Mashiko ware (Mashiko-yaki), a famous style of Japanese pottery made in Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo. Key characteristics include using local, iron-rich clay from the surrounding hills and locally sourced stone for natural glazes and they are known for an earthy, thick, plump, and/or rustic feels.
This plate can be used to serve a small side dish, sushi, or gyoza! The body is shaped like an gyoza (dumpling/potsticker) and continues with the characteristics of natural glazes and more earthy textures. A couple of small circles of turquoise glaze add a touch of color.
