This decorative serving plate is Mashiko ware (Mashiko-yaki), a famous style of Japanese pottery made in Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo. Key characteristics include using local, iron-rich clay from the surrounding hills and locally sourced stone for natural glazes and they are known for an earthy, thick, plump, and/or rustic feels.
This plate can be used to serve a small side dish or to serve sushi. The body is shaped like an oyster and continues with the characteristics of natural glazes and more earthy textures.
