Made by Yukihito Nakata at his family’s pottery studio in Kasama, Japan. Nakata practices the repertory of Japanese ceramicist, but does not let himself be bound solely by tradition. His pieces are made with utility and their user in mind, and with an imagination for modern life. While liberal in the influences on his ceramic forms, Nakata often uses a traditional tobiganna chisel tool to achieve a chattering effect on the surface of his work.
A Japanese mortar is called a suribachi. Instead of smashing, you use a circular grinding motion along the internal grooves to break down ingredients while preserving their textures and oils. Especially great for making sesame seed sauces!
